How we used AI in these photos

9 of 17 photos retouched with AI and marked on the photo: 8 edited and 1 simulation. The viewing remains the only reference.

How we edited them

The photographs in this listing were taken with a smartphone on 14 February 2023. 9 of the 17 published photographs were edited with a generative image model (Google's Nano Banana family, used through the Higgsfield platform), for one purpose only: to remove everyday items left lying around and to make up the double bed, which had no bedding. Removed: bottles of detergent, soap and alcohol, a yellow container, chopping boards and a tea towel, food packets and a pack of bottled water, a calendar and a sticker, coloured items on a shelf, a roll of paper towel, cables and a power strip, cardboard boxes, a bag, a case, a tray, a bottle and a plant saucer, a piece of fabric, a coat hanger, small objects on a shelf, brooms, rakes and other garden tools, a dustpan and brush, and a garden hose. All furniture, paintings, books, lamps, appliances and larger ornaments, and the contents of the CD cabinet in the room with the fireplace, were deliberately left in place. Some items that could not be removed without altering something else are also still visible: in the room with the fireplace, a television box, a bag under the table and a few bottles behind the TV; in the kitchen, two sponges in the sponge holder; in the double bedroom, a reed diffuser and a blue bottle on the shelves; at the far end of the veranda, in the photo taken from the garden side, brooms, rakes and buckets (they were removed in the other photo of the same veranda); plus a few minor small items, listed in the record. For the same reason, the photo of the bathroom with the shower and the photo of the garden along the house are published without generative AI, with the roll of paper, the bin, the garden hose and the hose reel in place. Where an object was removed, the part of the wall, floor or furniture it was hiding was not photographed: the model reconstructed it plausibly; the sheets and pillows on the double bed are also generated. The model also rebuilds the whole image rather than copying it: the fine grain of surfaces is redrawn, and in the double bedroom the rough plaster behind the bed has taken on a more regular texture than the real one. Apart from this, nothing else was changed: dimensions, heights, openings, floors, windows and doors, fittings and services, and finishes are as photographed, and no defect has been softened or hidden: the period tiles in the room with the fireplace, the exposed gas pipe in the kitchen, the rough plaster on the bathroom ceiling, the patchy dry lawn and the bare late-winter trees remain as they are. In five photographs, the areas where the model had redrawn things that had to stay (paintings and prints, masks and other objects hanging on the walls, a clock, the fireplace tool set, a black appliance under the table, the CD cabinet and its contents, the DVD player and the lettering on the television, the pot holder, the small shelf and the sponge holder in the kitchen, a garden tap) were put back from the original photograph, together with two defects that the model had softened in the room with the fireplace: the worn curtain rail and the cracks in the plaster below the ceiling, which now show as they are. The other 8 photographs have only a light and colour correction, with no generative AI. The hallway photo (generative) was also straightened locally. Light and colour were corrected as in any ordinary photo retouch. The original, unedited photographs are available on request; a viewing remains the only reliable reference for the actual condition of the property.
